Wildlife & Nature At Burke Lake

Burke Lake In Fairfax Station, Virginia

Shot With A Panasonic HC-X1

Burke Lake is one of my all time favorite parks in the DC Metro area. In fact I've been going there for over 30 years! In the dozens and dozens of times I've visited, I never actually took the time to look around and observe the park, and when I did, I found a lot of wildlife and nature that I'd been passing by this whole time. I recorded some of it above.

The video takes place on 2 different occasions, just at sunset at the end of February and then during a sunny afternoon at the end of March. Different times of day and different seasons will bring you different things to look for and to look at.

My favorite part about the video was the fact that I was able to capture some Great Blue Heron (I think) up close. This is a massive bird that looks really cool. There were 3 of them in the lake and they didn't get spooked by all the humans walking past them. They were just standing out in the water relaxing, and then dive bombing the water for food.

I think I got lucky with the heron because I have never seen them before at Burke Lake. What I did see (and do see every time I go) was a whole lot of seagulls and geese. These birds are everywhere, mostly because people feed them (boo).

Nature watching is just one of the activities you can do at Burke Lake. An endless variety of birds (including eagles), squirrels and even snakes. Next time you are at the park riding the mini-train or playing frisbee golf, take a minute to look around. You might see something you didn't even know was there!
